Shanghai – Hangzhou Train Routes

Hangzhou-West-lake

Hangzhou is a popular day-trip from Shanghai. It is also an easy trip as there are over 100 pairs of trains between the two cities. While there are plenty of options, in order to maximize your sightseeing time, you need to carefully pick your trains. Here is some advice to keep in mind.

However understand that, while there are many trains, in the last couple of days prior to departure, ticket sales increase. While you can still find tickets at the station for same-day departures, you may have to wait 2-3 hours for the next available train.

Shanghai to Hangzhou trains

Trains can depart Shanghai from three different stations. All three stations are connected to the subway system and easy to get to. So the choice of the departing station is not a factor. To visit the usual attractions in Hangzhou, you can arrive at either the Hangzhou railway station or the Hangzhou east station. There are high-speed trains (G and D trains) as well as normal trains (K, T and Z trains). The normal trains take two hours or more while most high-speed trains will cover this route in one hour or less. Bullet trains are definitively better. And among the bullet trains, the D trains are the cheapest option for the equivalent travel duration however, these tickets are more difficult to get.
