The Beijing-Datong train line is a very popular train route in China as Datong is a very interesting destination. There are no high-speed trains for this route. Also, most trains depart at rather inconvenient times.
Beijing to Datong trains
The best trains from Beijing leave late at night and arrive early in the morning. Train 1133 is not a good choice as it is very hard to get tickets. K695 is the best choice to travel from Beijing to Datong. If this one is not available, train number 2603 is just as good. Note that, when booking train number 2603, the train leaves after midnight so the date is actually one day later. These two trains that we recommend both depart from the Beijing railway station.If you wish to travel during day time, K615 is a good option

Datong to Beijing trains
Getting from Datong to Beijing is not simple. Most trains travel at inconvenient times. Also because the train ride is rather short, one cannot have a very good sleep. However, we recommend two trains that are better than others. K598 is the best overnight train. In daytime K616 is the most convenient. The fares for these two trains are as follows:
